Description:
The Controls Engineer Intern follows instructions related to the design, tracking, and installation of systems and/or service installed jobs. Responsibilities may include ordering materials, entering database and programming information, creating and installing new software, and performing troubleshooting functions for assigned jobs. The position coordinates with the Controls Team Lead on all assigned projects and works under close supervision.
The intern supports project documentation, including system layouts, databases, submittals, network layouts, and as-built drawings. The position may also assist with ordering materials, programming, software updates, and troubleshooting.
The Controls Engineer Intern also assists with sales estimating on potential or current projects, including determining the time required to complete tasks, correlating labor and material pricing from the sales team while meeting guidelines set by plans and specifications, and determining when change orders are necessary and generating pricing for additional work. The position also assists with installation of controls jobs and projects, including startup, certification, and project turnover as required.
The position provides customer service and technical assistance to build and maintain customer relationships. This includes developing relationships with customer end users and decision makers, presenting a professional image of Building Controls and Services when speaking to customers, and serving as a technical resource to customers and other BCS staff.
Additional duties may be assigned as needed to support business operations; however, such duties will be reasonable, job-related, and consistent with the scope, level, and classification of the position.
Essential Functions:
• Updates pertinent job-related information and develops project information using given software.
• Generates RFIs (Request for Information) during projects.
• Incorporates project blueprints and specifications into submittal booklets.
• Prepares system overviews of network layouts.
• Prepares as-built record drawings and documents, including graphical screenshots and printed programs.
• Stays current with new software and changes to existing software by studying product manuals, brochures, and vendor websites.
• Assists with sales estimating on potential or current projects.
• Determines task completion time and supports finishing projects on-time and under budget.
• Correlates labor and material pricing from the sales team while meeting guidelines set by plans and specifications.
• Determines when change orders are necessary and generates pricing for additional work.
• Assists with installation of controls jobs and projects, including startup, certification, and project turnover as required.
• Assists with installation of devices/controls on projects as required.
• Provides customer service and technical assistance and acts as a technical resource to customers and other BCS staff.
Work Environment & Physical Demands:
• Requires sitting and walking on a frequent basis; standing, bending, climbing, balancing, twisting, and reaching with hands and arms on an occasional basis.
• Requires the ability to carry, lift, move, or push up to 25 pounds on a regular basis and may require carrying, lifting, moving, or pushing 100 pounds or more occasionally.
• Requires frequent use of manual dexterity and visualization of a computer screen through the day.
• Requires the ability to see up close and distant, distinguish colors, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
• Regularly works in an office setting and on job sites in indoor and outdoor conditions, including near moving mechanical parts, in high or precarious places, and in extreme heat, cold, and humidity.
• May have occasional exposure to toxic or caustic fumes or chemicals.
• Regular job-site noise levels range from moderate to very loud.
• Most job duties require working on HVAC equipment in close quarters, with testing performed while equipment is operating, creating noise and air movement.
• Many customer facilities have unfavorable environmental conditions.
• Many job duties require regular work with computers and electronic media.
• Requires travel to and from job sites for start-up and commissioning and occasional overnight stays.
Required Experience:
• Working toward a bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical, or architectural engineering.
• Technical training.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as blueprints, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Proficiency in using the engineering workstation, including full capacity of the AutoCAD drafting standards.
• Proficiency in using the current Windows Operating System for workstation and server applications.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Mathematical ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and create and interpret graphs.
• Strong problem-solving ability.
• Ability to carry out instructions provided in written, oral, or diagram form.
• Ability to evaluate urgency of situations and prioritize tasks.
• Organized with attention to detail.
• Valid driver license.
Preferred Experience:
• Minimum one year of experience in engineering systems and/or systems service.
• Strong knowledge of automation systems, HVAC, and electrical concepts and operations.
Other requirements:
• May require overtime, evening, or weekend work.
• Requires travel to and from job sites for start-up and commissioning.
• Requires occasional overnight stays.
• 40 hours continuing education annually.
