Job Description:
This is a hands-on accounting role for an experienced accountant who will serve as the day-to-day accounting lead for assigned operating companies (OpCos). Reporting to the Regional Accounting Manager, the Senior Accountant owns the accounting close for assigned OpCos and is responsible for the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of the accounting records and close deliverables. The Regional Accounting Manager provides final review and serves as the primary resource for complex or judgmental technical accounting matters. This role operates in a fast-paced, high-growth environment where priorities can shift and processes will continue to evolve as the organization grows. The right person will be comfortable working independently, determining what needs attention, managing competing priorities, and keeping work moving without needing every step defined for them.

The Senior Accountant will work closely with the local accounting staff to coordinate deadlines, resolve accounting issues, review supporting work, and help ensure transactions are recorded correctly. The successful candidate should have a solid working knowledge of U.S. GAAP, strong accounting fundamentals, and the judgment to recognize when an issue requires additional technical guidance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Accounting Leadership and Operations

  • Serve as the day-to-day accounting lead for assigned OpCos and a key accounting partner to OpCo leadership, taking initiative to identify priorities and keep accounting work moving.
  • Own the completeness and quality of the general ledger, supporting schedules, and monthly close package for assigned OpCos.
  • Work closely with local accounting staff who report to OpCo leadership, providing accounting guidance and coordinating close activities without direct supervisory responsibility.
  • Provide practical accounting guidance to local staff and help resolve routine accounting and process questions without serving as their direct manager.
  • Review the accounting results and supporting documentation produced through local processes, and follow up on incomplete, unsupported, or incorrectly recorded transactions.
  • Recognize accounting issues that are unusual, material, complex, or judgmental and bring them to the Regional Accounting Manager with the relevant facts and supporting information.
  • Use sound judgment to resolve routine matters independently and escalate control concerns, significant errors, unusual transactions, and risks to deadlines to the Regional Accounting Manager in a timely manner.
Month-End Close and Financial Reporting
  • Own and execute the full monthly, quarterly, and annual close process for assigned OpCos in accordance with the corporate close calendar.
  • Prepare, support, and post recurring and non-recurring journal entries, including accruals, reclassifications, allocations, prepaid expense activity, fixed asset activity, and other close adjustments.
  • Prepare and/or review balance sheet reconciliations; investigate aged or unusual reconciling items and drive timely resolution.
  • Reconcile AP, AR, payroll, cash, intercompany, and other applicable subledgers or supporting schedules to the general ledger.
  • Review period cutoff and ensure revenue, expenses, payroll, vendor invoices, customer billing, and other applicable activity are recorded in the proper period.
  • Prepare financial reporting, account-level variance analysis, and supporting schedules for Regional Accounting Manager review.
  • Explain significant period-over-period changes and identify entries, errors, trends, or open items requiring correction or follow-up.
  • Maintain clear, organized workpapers that support an efficient final review by the Regional Accounting Manager.
GAAP and Accounting Compliance
  • Apply U.S. GAAP and company accounting policies to routine accounting transactions and recurring close activities.
  • Research routine accounting questions when appropriate and consult with the Regional Accounting Manager on matters requiring significant interpretation or technical judgment.
  • Gather and document relevant facts, contracts, schedules, or other support needed for the Regional Accounting Manager to evaluate complex or non-routine accounting matters.
  • Ensure consistent application of the chart of accounts, accounting policies, documentation standards, and close procedures across assigned OpCos.
  • Support external audit, internal audit, tax, and other compliance requests by preparing schedules, gathering support, and responding to follow-up questions.
  • Maintain recurring close, filing, and compliance calendars applicable to the assigned OpCos.
Operational and Job Accounting Support
  • Partner with OpCo leaders to understand business activity and ensure operational events are reflected accurately in the financial records.
  • Review open jobs, job closeouts, unbilled or deferred activity, job-related accruals, and margin trends as applicable.
  • Work with operational teams to improve the accuracy of basic job-cost information and learn company-specific job-costing processes and systems.
  • Review the accounting impact of customer contracts, change orders, commissions, rebates, warranties, and other arrangements and involve the Regional Accounting Manager when additional accounting guidance is needed.
  • Monitor AR, AP, collections, cash, and working-capital trends and help resolve accounting or process issues that affect reporting accuracy.
  • Provide cross-functional backup support for AR, AP, and payroll operations during periods of absence, increased workload, or staffing transitions to maintain timely transaction processing and customer/vendor service levels.
Internal Controls, Systems, and Process Improvement
  • Follow and help maintain internal controls, including approvals, segregation of duties, account reconciliations, and supporting documentation.
  • Identify potential control gaps created by lean local staffing and raise them to the Regional Accounting Manager for evaluation.
  • Document and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), close checklists, recurring-entry support, and process responsibilities for assigned OpCos.
  • Identify opportunities to standardize, simplify, or automate accounting processes without weakening controls.
  • Support ERP improvements, system implementations, integrations, and new-entity or acquisition onboarding as assigned.

Experience and Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required.
  • CPA, CPA eligibility, or active CPA candidacy preferred, but not required.
  • Five or more years of progressive accounting experience, including hands-on responsibility for the month-end close and general ledger.
  • Solid working knowledge of U.S. GAAP and strong accounting fundamentals, including the ability to recognize when an issue requires additional technical guidance.
  • Demonstrated experience preparing and reviewing journal entries, accruals, account reconciliations, preliminary financial statements, and variance analyses.
  • Experience supporting multiple entities, business units, locations, or a comparably complex accounting environment strongly preferred.
  • Experience in commercial HVAC, construction, service, distribution, or another project-based environment preferred; prior advanced job-costing experience is not required.
  • Experience with ERP and accounting systems required; experience with TurboPro, QBO, Infor, Oracle, or similar systems preferred.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills, including experience using formulas, lookup functions, pivot tables, and large data sets for accounting analysis and reconciliations.
  • Ability to independently manage the full close for assigned OpCos, balance competing deadlines, and communicate risks or open items before they affect reporting.
  • Comfortable asking questions, challenging incomplete or inconsistent information, and following issues through to resolution.
  • Ability to explain accounting concepts in straightforward language and provide useful guidance to local accounting staff without direct reporting authority.
  • Self-directed and comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-growth environment with changing priorities and evolving processes. Able to work through problems independently, make sound day-to-day decisions, and recognize when guidance or escalation is needed.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to move quickly without sacrificing accuracy, documentation, or follow-through.
  • Ability to work primarily from the Houston office with limited travel to supported OpCo locations.

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
